Chemistry:
Chemistry performs a wide variety of tests using the most current technology. It is defined as the scientific study of matter and the various compounds of the elements as it relates to the human body. Common tests analyzed in the chemistry laboratory are glucose, cholesterol, BUN, creatinine, potassium, liver and heart enzymes, thyroid tests and hormone tests, and PSA.

Hematology:
Hematology is the study of blood, blood morphology and blood diseases. Hematologists count and classify blood cells into different categories. Coagulation is the study of the clotting activity of blood.

Microbiology:
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms including algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses. Any bodily fluid or tissue can be cultured for infectious disease. Once bacteria grows in culture, it can be tested against many different antibiotics to find the most effective for fighting the infection while limiting opportunities for antibiotic resistance.

Transfusion Services/Immunology:
Transfusion Services provides blood transfusion support by providing the patient with red cells, plasma, cryoprecipitate, or platelets. Testing is performed on the patient’s blood specimen prior to transfusing to make sure compatible blood is given. Blood products dispensed by Winona Health are supplied by the American Red Cross of St Paul, MN

Immunology:
Immunology is the study of immune products such as antibodies produced by the body in response to foreign material.

Surgical Pathology:
Pathology is the branch of medicine, which treats the essential nature of disease, especially the structural and functional changes in tissues and organs of the body, which cause or are caused by disease.

Cytology:
In cytology, a skilled cytotechnologist examines human cells under the microscope, looking for early signs of cancer and other diseases. The most common type of specimen processed in the Cytology department is the Pap smear.

Basic Ambulance (BLS)

Basic ambulances are used to transport patients who require primary medical supervision under minor or uncritical situations. These ambulances are managed by an emergency medical technician (EMT). Basic ambulances carry equipment's such as a pulse oximeter and oxygen delivery devices.

Advance Ambulance (ICU)

Advance ambulances are used to transfer patients who require high level of care and monitoring i.e. patients suffering from life-threatening causalities such as cardiac emergencies etc. These ambulances contain equipment's such as ECG monitor, defibrillator, intravenous, blood drawing tools etc.

Mortuary Ambulance (HEARSE)

A mortuary ambulance is used for the transportation of a dead body. Medically trained staff ensure that all the necessary precautions are taken and safety guidelines are followed while transporting the physical remains of a person. These ambulances carry a freezer box to preserve the body until the last rites are performed. These also called as Hearse Vans.

An inpatient department or IPD is a unit of a hospital or a healthcare facility where patients are admitted for medical conditions that require appropriate care and attention. An Inpatient Department of the hospital is equipped with beds, medical equipments, round the clock availability of doctors and nurses.

Intensive Care Specialist

An intensive care specialist is a medical specialist trained and assessed to be proficient in the comprehensive clinical management of critically ill patients as the leader of a multidisciplinary team. Critically ill patients include patients with life-threatening single and multiple organ system failure, those at risk of clinical deterioration as well as those requiring resuscitation and/or management in an intensive care unit or a high dependency unit.

The intensive care specialist has clinical skills that include the ability to recognise and manage the disturbances associated with severe medical, surgical, obstetric and paediatric illness and to diagnose and treat the conditions that cause them. This usually involves invasive and non-invasive diagnostic techniques, monitoring, and treatment modalities designed to support vital organs.

The intensive care specialist is also an expert in end of life care, the diagnosis of brain death, and care and support of the organ donor.

Intensive care specialists are also frequently involved in the management of deteriorating and seriously ill patients outside the intensive care unit as well as the transport and retrieval of critically ill patients.

To facilitate his or her practice the intensive care specialist has advanced communication skills that enable appropriate and effective interaction with patients, families, other team members and referring clinicians, and that enable collaborative, multidisciplinary practice.

The intensive care specialist continues to learn throughout professional life and acknowledges that involvement in teaching, research, quality improvement and administration are integral to the role.
